Seasonal Allergies: How To Dial Down The Symptoms

Specific Health Concern 23 April 2024

Spring is in the air and those familiar but frustrating allergy symptoms can make a comeback. From itchy watery eyes to a runny nose and fatigue, those frustrating symptoms are far from a trivial problem. In fact, they can affect the quality of life, from sleep to concentration and even the ability to carry out daily tasks.

Furthermore, seasonal allergies can be an all-year-round occurrence, with hay fever in spring, grass allergies in summer, mould in autumn, dust and pet danders in winter. Seasonal allergic rhinitis is responsible for these reactions and involves inflammation of the lining of the nose caused by an airborne allergic trigger (1). In the UK, allergic rhinitis is extremely common affecting around 1 in every 5 people (2), with cases trebling over the last 20 years (3).

What is the solution to seasonal allergies?

Unfortunately, there is no cure for seasonal allergies, therefore the first-line treatment recommended by GP’s and pharmacists are antihistamines to manage symptoms. However, many people are reluctant to take drugs daily, and others may not tolerate their side effects such as drowsiness and dizziness. Finally, some may not want to give regular medication to children for symptom management. However, when it comes to natural solutions, many are designed to work as a preventative measure which can take weeks to see effects, and not all products have robust clinical trials to support their effectiveness. This is where Immunity Defence steps in, as it is a fasting acting, all year-round natural solution for the whole family including adults and children…

What is Immunity Defence and how can it dial down seasonal allergies?

During the 1970s a French GP noticed that quail farmers who regularly consumed quail eggs showed fewer seasonal allergies compared to the rest of the population in the same area. Test tube studies then showed that quail eggs contain unique bioactive compounds called ovomucoids which are a type of glycoprotein (4). The level of ovomucoids is much higher in quail’s eggs in comparison to other types of egg! Recent studies show that most airborne allergens have trypsin-like structures. These ovomucoids act as a trypsin inhibitor and block allergens before they can activate immune cells, thereby preventing the release of inflammatory mediators such as histamine.

How quickly can you see symptom relief?

Subsequently, clinical trials have been conducted in humans, including a 2014 randomised, double-blind, crossover, placebo-controlled trial (the gold standard type of study). This trial exposed participants who suffer from allergic rhinitis to a strong cocktail of environmental allergens including tree pollen, grass pollen, dust mites and pet dander’s. The participants were then given 2 tablets of Immunity Defence or a placebo. Using a Peak Nasal Inspiratory Flow detector, they measured nasal congestion every 15 minutes for two hours and saw allergy relief in as little as 10-15 minutes!!

This objective measure of nasal congestion also showed an 18% improvement in nasal breathing compared to the placebo group. Subjects also reported 30% reduction in a runny nose, 20% reduction in watery eyes, 24% reduction in itchy eyes and 17% reduction in an itchy nose (5).

How to take Immunity Defence

Take two tablets on symptoms forming for symptom relief within 15 minutes, or you could take as a preventative measure. For example, if you’re heading out for a walk where you know the pollen count will be high, take two tables 15-20 minutes prior to the allergen exposure. Avoid swallowing Immunity Defence tablets as the active ingredient is absorbed via the mouth. Instead, gently chew tablets to allow for optimal absorption.

Whilst those with an egg allergy should avoid Immunity Defence, it has been demonstrated that overall immunity defence is well tolerated by adults and children as young as 4**. Independent studies have shown this product is also safe to take during pregnancy and whilst breastfeeding.
